Tracing, so simple time. Chris, the red light and it's recording. Battery's low. Did say battery low?
No, it's... Morning, good afternoon, good evening. Listening to the old talk car podcast. After four, five years out, finally got it.
So we're doing a live drive that you can hear and we're inside something really special. We've got something out of the fleet. Porsche 911, 996 to low S. And it's the X50 pack.
What's X50? That was a turbo S. Oh, was it? Oh, you know that?
There you go. It's the 996, so those who don't know their Porsche, nomenclature. We're going to need some tweezers to get those things out of the airfics because they're really annoying me. Oh, what is it?
Oh, no, it's not from it. No, it's not from it. It's from the leaves or stuff that are setting there. So basically, the 996 is the mid-90s, 911.
It was very much unloved. So it was the era when the air called... The 911 went from air called to water called. It was after the recession where Porsche and he went bankrupt.
The purists hated it. It shares a lot of parts with the box-stoke hoodie. The one that's brings up the biggest uproar is the headlights. They're not perfectly round.
They've got that milkshape egg, the open melted shape, the fried egg. And it looks good in silver, you know, but then when you get darker or other colours, it doesn't have to be as much. I don't mind it. It went a lot wider.
It's a lot bigger. The rear end I liked. They especially in the 4S and the turbos. It got the wide arse with the vents at the back.
I remember a guy back in the... 996, first came out. He goes, I can't handle it. It reminds me of what widespread spreads, saggy and sunny side up nipples.
I never read that in the wheels, back in the... No, it wasn't in wheels. It was in a car van. It was in a car van.
So basically, and because of that, they were always the cheaper 911 on the scale of 911, because after that the 997 came out at the early 2000s, and they fixed the front end and just improved it. But this car was way advanced to the 993. Oh, yeah. The air-cooled engine, they couldn't get any more power out of it.
They had to go into the water-cooled engine too. Anyways, sorry. Yes, very smooth, very linear. Oh, what a cheap.
And if you guys want to know how smooth this car is, you can see it's a little bit tight up. But a 90-year-old fell up is sitting in the back seat, and he hasn't even got flinched even though they've been running through the gears, all the way up to 156. We are in Mexico. Mexico, in a private track.
So basically, this is a six-speed manual. And it is smooth as the clutch is perfectly weighted. I was saying to hell, the earlier the MX-5 gearbox was a little bit tighter. But you can't go wrong with this gearbox.
But smooth, linear, the delivery, once the turbo is kicked in. At the time it was, it got some flack. But the thing was, once people started driving, they realized what it was in generation-wise from the 993. And now it is a morning classic.
The 996 is a morning classic. It was a morning classic 10 years ago. They were just, they were just, not on the radar. Then once the 911 just went through that stratospheric, boosted in prices, they sort of got, they were still the cheaper ones.
So those were one at a 911. Had to look at a 996 and they realized, you know, what, that's not bad. That's not bad. That's not bad.
That's not bad. The 996 is that is, like, most people want an E-ray. They just want a two-wheel drive. They're going to race.
That's right. That's right. That's right. That's right.
That's right. They just threw the roof because they realized that, you can't get a 964 or a 993 in reasonable condition. That's been well maintained. They're 30 plus-year-old cars.
They're 30 plus-year-old cars. They're 30 plus-year-old cars. And really, you really want to know, your portion is, if you're going to go ahead one of those, because you can go pair-shaped very quickly here. Whereas with the 996, a lot more availability, a lot more, now, here with the community.
You can, and there was a lot more of a build sense, a better chance of getting a good car. That's been well looked after. A lot of it was sold. They're not like rare as hands like Ferraris.
The Porsche's are, there's a lot of it out. You can find parts, but the 996 just went to the next level. I mean, you remember back in the day, we were at Liverpool out. A good made-of-hours.
We still won't come on the podcast. That was with the GT3. It's first came out in the 996. Well, you could tell it's a 1,500 piece.
We had the GT3 and we haven't had the chance experience with GT3. RS. Thanks to Mr. D'Vicros.
And basically, those cars will track the first of the track road car, track-ready, heavens. Well, yeah, we are, our esteemed friends before driving the GT3 RS. The streets of the S and Sub-Aruberic. Oh, you know that?
And this thing was on slicks. Right? What slicks? Why don't we just die?
Right? And once they had a reasonable amount of heat in it, we were going over blind corners. Right? And this thing was like on rails.
Yeah. They were an amazing model. They just had that stigma. You know, it's like going out with a top girl, great personality.
She makes a laugh, but she's got those front teeth. Look, the front of the bush for 10 seconds. You can't have seen some that have been wrapped like that. You know how to make it like a circle.
Yeah, that's what's wrong. Yeah, that's like putting a mouth card on the wall. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It looks right.
But like this car is just, you can drive it like an old man and you can drive it in any car. And it's in your control. The fact that it's a manual. We can't get away from you.
I just love it. It's really well. At the top, it's at the door. The purest is hated.
The media, the money, the media, the guys love it. They love it. They're all guys love that. They drove it.
They're 25 years on. Let's cast 24 years on. No, it's not a Greek or a Rattle. It's not a Greek or a Rattle.
They're only 22 years ago. Yes, it goes. It goes. And everything was turned up, everything was turned up.
Everything is turned up. It's not a Rattle. It's painted up. In the era of computer screens, you've got your Classy $5.911 player.
That's that's what happens when you stick to a method that's been proven. It's simple. It wasn't overly but it's not like it is. It's 80.
It's not. You've got the clean pad there for. If you have the SIM card option. But you've got the classic Dash layer from the 60's.
out from the 60s and you've got the console it's just that that was a message right you don't account the buttons should we start and start with you it's an I was like I tell you now we can count it you know this is a typical German car it's got those slots like the blue W3 series had yeah yeah it was basically a built-in so you hold like a four stack of one two three four stack but the hold not the blade not yet to hold the whole yeah and that doesn't work in the summer no because of no you're not the sea but make it's like clear everything's in its position the stalks everywhere obviously it's got your cruise control it's got your menu so that's any dot matrix type digital screen where you go through the menus old school with the stalk they had back down a function where you could buy a sinkart it was like a seven thousand option we would see a card and you got a keypad to use that portion was a communications package yeah or you could spend 90 dollars and get the hands freaky from Nokia I like someone with this card I know it's like it's usually that corner oh okay no no no that's one of those borders where they're waiting for you with a speed gun on the track to see how much you're going to say you're facing it's like looking just out there fuck sake oh my god that's gold yeah no it's um beautiful car it doesn't feel like the 993 you can build the arses heady because the engines at the back you don't have that sort of sensation in this well the all-wheel drive added the way to the nose as well so yeah so yeah it's a bit more direct handling there's no biases as much you're you're up in control it's not it content but I'm not that much it's not like the 993 we're living in it you know I've driven a lot of different people together I like the car punk is old school so you get pulls out just everything for the driver everything's okay no no no that was an option but then it's a good option see if you ever had to do this car you have had that option I think I said the story years ago again three he bought the was a 36 which is a popular in three yeah so you ordered the M3 and they were like popular for me but they're released and there was one button missing on the roll buttons and so you wanted another M3 to have that button and he traded in his at the first day for a year later at the same money then because it was a weightless release things you know that missing button was a red line so you press it and it literally would come up at the window well I'm pretty sure he had the world's most expensive option came and when they first came in the first saw the secret that was basically yeah yeah the portion South fit a host of GT3 parts not suspension wheels it was a baby GT3 maybe Porsche got the idea for the GT for a friend we've got a massive option somewhere a Porsche marketing went someone it's simply optioned up okay when we just eat three parts I got an idea okay this Porsche guys tick boxes and more boxes and back in Porsche learn after the 968 was so early 90s that have the club sport edition but what would happen is they take the stuff out but charge less so the 996 changed that with the GT they take the stuff out but charge more charge more and that's been the formula you know what that no it's more money yeah that's it I remember them in the 968 plus more was out that was the cheapest model and a model and they commanding high 100s out in the market so hey so this is the post-recession Porsche where you know they need to wear broke the box the safest is the company the mean 90s that you walk the box and in the KN yeah but then that's where the part sharing came about because I basically want a budget but the 996 many people don't know the 993 the last of the air cool was meant to be water cool but they didn't have the money so you're a budget for it so if it wasn't for the recession the 993 would have been water cool and then it's like a slightly doors moment what would they've said about the 996 so you know I think they just threw the the water cooled engine and the controversial looks and basically just got hit with the bad stick well look at age well what's in the moment it's it's it's it's at the end of the day it's a push it's it's got it all the way I've got a mistake it for anything else and now you've got people that sort of like that that generation 24 years ago the guy the teenagers and that that a successful now they're doing the following 996ers because they're like when me you were a kid it was the 932 about was they had the bad boys the 964 to about which is now if you want to if you want to break on 6s bad boys to about you it's like one and a half million Australia right so it's and it's probably I don't like that I love it that is that is that is just back so of all the 997 nice and good 991 what 911 would you get? I would you're off I'd like a 993 yep I got that 993 career S manual such as two or just simple plane just an S okay no turbo not fast see two-wheel drive widebody so we did I like drive in the 993 turbo and it was the last of the old school because the pedals were everywhere floor hinge yeah so when you took off your first I did my when you're up and running you can change the normal the first was at first is a headache because the conscious floor hinge where that's where the 996 onwards it became a car I just like that 993 the shape the shape the shape two or drive manual widebody simple simple but alternatively a 964 narrow body you know right again manual okay that's a 4 no no S no two or drive I don't know I thought that's the bad all-wheel drive and that was the first yeah all right yeah so yeah look I love I love that your lines I love I've always liked the 996 I like the quirky portions I like my 968 I like the left-wheel ones and this turbo S I think I'm wrapped up having yes I think I think collectability wise I actually think a probably a 997 GT3 in the middle ground of affordability these days it's the body mount it's the 997 now that's sort of going through that base okay everyone's seen the 996 and they stayed the shoot up yeah so a 997 GT3 got me the RS 997 GT3 right is a I think a good middle ground because you're gonna you're really getting that led to the to the next model performance wise again but the newer is it just so comfortable they just they don't know that performance about yeah look I haven't had a chance to drive a 911 or a 992 we do have a cable company do have it in the pipeline that they will come short we haven't in the pipeline the GT2 RS yes yes it's a couple weeks listen up and it's rich they are so you may even be making an appearance at Cg Dragway for us to rattle off some pipes for it so watch this space so we could be listening actually what we might do is pull out the 996 and take it back I think you might want to take the 997 the generational that's part of action take the 997 we've done it like rather than 970 either so we'll work away after the 997 GT2 RS with the 992 yeah that is what I'm sorry George if you do have the trip over this episode that is the 997 to the fleet that is probably the quickest cars over the driven that is a weapon so with its PDK box but not as engaging as this one this is a lot I love this is an along done 21st century like 20th century analog and then from there it got all yeah did you all uncomplicated thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up and we got someone in the back seat so it is a practical four-seater family car yes so no one's given the thumbs up he's comfortable at the back so that's the 996 turn away in black rate us review us like us yes Instagram Facebook email us at all talk it out look doc over there you read all your questions and comments and till next time bye for now
