The military engagements of the US Civil War came to an end in 1865, but the ideology of the confederacy was not so easily defeated. In this episode we speak with Dr. Heather Cox Richardson about her new book How the South Won the Civil War: Oligarchy, Democracy, and the Continuing Fight for the Soul of America and how the worldview of antebellum southern elites came to be embraced by the "movement conservatives" who are at the helm of the modern Republican party. Heather also talks about how she's able to make history relatable to a general audience, her writing process, and why she is fearful, but optimistic, about the future of democracy in the United States. Dr. Heather Cox Richardson is Professor of History at Boston College and the author of six books on US history.
