#179 - Heavy Flirtation | More Ryan Adams Cover Albums | vs. UMG vs.

from You Should Check It Out · host Wimbly Stoke

Greg brings three metal adjacent bands to the show this week, more of a heavy flirtation than a heavy rotation. English rock band Porcupine Tree, led by the prolific Steven Wilson, formed in 1987. The progressive rock band Karnivool is our latest Aussie band to add to the show, hailing from Perth since 1997. Finally we listen to the prog metal band Opeth, which formed in Stockholm in 1990. Combined Greg’s got 95 years of international prog rock experience coming at you this week and it is delightful!Songs:Karnivool - “Set Fire to the Hive”Porcupine Tree - “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here”Opeth - “Deliverance”Jay’s had mixed emotions with Ryan Adams recent output. Two new cover albums at the tail end of 2022 seemed like great news! Fear set in when he discovered that the albums were Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska & Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks, which was quelled when he learned they would free! Then he listened to them…Song: Stuff - “Foots (Live Montreux ’76)"Nick brings us some legal news as UMG found itself on either side of two lawsuits this week. Black Sheep is suing UMG, partly due to a claim that they accepted lower streaming revenue in exchange for ownership stake in Spotify. UMG denies the claim and, meanwhile filed a suit against the video-sharing social network Triller for $750 million for unpaid license fees. UMG has no ownership stake in Triller, but Nick’s not implying anything by that, right?Song: Keith Jarrett - “Part V (Live in Stockholm 1972)”
