17_01_19_Ave Maria_Cherubini
from ESCÚCHATE SEMINARIO
The Ave Maria is long past its heyday in the repertoire; but throughout the nineteenth century Continental European audiences could hardly avoid hearing it for any length of time at all. More often than not, it was and is heard in arrangement for voice and keyboard, though the solo wind instrument, whether clarinet or cor anglais (aka English horn), is sorely missed in such a rendition. Cherubini's Ave Maria is a motet, not in the medieval or Renaissance sense, but rather in the looser, post-Baroque sense of a single-movement, self-sufficient vocal setting (either chorale or, as in this case, solo) of a short, sacred Latin text.
