18: Communities, Vulnerability and Female Founders with Angelica Malin

from Grad Life by the Horns · host Sophie Scully

To open up Season 3, this week's episode is with the brilliant Angelica Malin; entrepreneur, podcaster and events host to name a few. On a pleasant Friday night before full lockdown even seemed plausible, Becki and Sophie chatted with Angelica about the importance of listening, women in business, events and so much more. * Our guest this week is Angelica Malin: Editor-in-Chief of 'About Time' Magazine, founder of 'She Started It' UK and the recent 'Unprecedented' podcast which talks to different industries about coping mechanisms during a pandemic. When we spoke to Angelica, it was a matter of days before she regretfully had to postpone her 'She Started it Live' festival due to coronavirus. Angelica always had a strong work ethic, even in university where she would work as a TV runner alongside other various part-time roles. Since then, Angelica has been dedicated to finding her authentic purpose and her 'why' in business, bringing her values to the surface and learning how to manage expectations. 'About Time' Magazine is platformed as a 'digital lifestyle for the curious Londoner' and boasts 1000s of engaged readers across the globe. But she doesn't stop there. 'She Started It' is a vessel for 'shining a spotlight on the UK's brightest female entrepreneurs' and expands into events, festivals, an online academy and a podcast. Angelica gives a wonderful insight in to the behind-the-scenes of the business world, including hiring tips, digitalisation, branding, flexible working and culture. Most prominently, how this all manifests with women in business and the topics of imposter syndrome, saying 'sorry' and diversity. A golden thread throughout the episode is the importance of listening, and how we can learn so much more if we pay attention to others and step away from our screens to establish genuine connection. A pure inspiration for women everywhere and grads as a whole, we look forward to seeing so much more from Angelica. Including and not limited to her book set to release in 2021...stay tuned!
