18. Dad's Expectations vs. Kid's Experience
from Fathers Fire · host Jody Sedrick
This week Neil Legend of ChampionFyre joins me for a very candid discussion about some differences in the black and white community that he saw as a young man in preparing kids for adulthood. He asks some very hard-hitting questions leading up to a discussion about at 18 do we just kick the kids out and say "You're an adult figure it out" or do we give educate them and give them a solid foundation and even support as they make the transition into adulthood. Show highlights Differences in his home versus what he saw in his friends home The generosity of Jennifer helping him and his dad as a young man Jody expressing that he never felt poor even though we lived frugally as a young Navy family The blessing of having parents that worked creatively together to support the family Keeping the bigger picture of building a strong family Neil realizing that God forgave his dad for the things he’s done so he needs to forgive as well. Holding our Dad to a different standard than we hold ourselves Forgiveness helped rebuild and strengthen his relationship as a father The challenge of looking up to your dad but also allowing him grace to be human Dealing with your kids when you have similar personalities that conflict Teaching your kids about saving and managing money - this, in particular, is lacking in the black community We have an education problem Eric Thomas, Carl, CJ doing everything they can to show black men and all men that you can live differently Putting our kids in the best position for success Working with them to explore a dream, interest or passion Please check out the rest of the SpeakFyre family Michael Gingras - LeadershipFyre Sean Brasfield - YoungFyre Bobby Berg - StudentFyre Aisha Thomas - InternalFyre Cornelius Dunlap - ChampionFyre I also invite you to check out my podcast Choose Don't Excuse that I co-host with my wife Judie Sedrick.
