18. Getting to the Top of the Mountain and Still Feeling Lost (ft. Katelyn Preston, LMFT)
from Therapy Tea: Demystifying the Mental Health Profession · host Jazmin Crookes, LPC and Karen Jennett, LPC
This week Karen was reminded how meaningful it can be to witness genuine client success as a helping professional and what it feels like to have a client “graduate” from therapy. Karen shares how a particular success story with a client has felt extremely emotional for her and triggered not only a profound sense of gratitude, but also an existential experience of awe and connection with humanity. Today we talked to Katelyn Preston (AKA “KP”) who is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Texas and Colorado. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage, Couple, Family Counseling from Texas State University - San Marcos. While she has previously worked in group practice, non-profit agencies, a state hospital, juvenile probation, and a residential facility for youth, Katelyn currently works in a solo private practice in Colorado where she focuses on relationship issues with couples and individuals.Katelyn gets vulnerable about feeling lost in the counseling profession right now. She shares her experience questioning her chosen career path and wondering whether it’s normal that it often feels impossible to find the “right fit” career-wise. With Katelyn, we really go deep into a common, but somewhat taboo, topic of conversation in our profession. This topic is so close to Karen and Jazmin’s heart and the real reason for this podcast - so we really go all in with Katelyn on this! What a gift it was to have Katelyn be raw and honest, and share right along with us the struggle with identity and purpose that often comes even when you get to where you always thought you wanted to go.
