18 Horses Seized—Now They’re Going Back? The Muddy Water Ranch Case

What happened at Muddy Water Ranch, and were the seized horses returned to their owner? In August 2025, humane agents seized 18 horses from Muddy Water Equestrian Park—also reported as Muddy Water Ranch or Muddy Waters Ranch—in Springfield Township, Ohio. Authorities alleged that horses at the property were severely underweight and suffering from inadequate care. Two horses connected to the case were later euthanized. Ranch owner Clarence Clemmons faced 18 counts of animal cruelty and pleaded not guilty. The criminal case eventually collapsed after a judge ruled that humane agents had coerced Clemmons into allowing them onto the property, violating his Fourth Amendment rights. Photographs and other evidence gathered during three visits were suppressed. The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office initially appealed that decision. However, prosecutors abandoned the appeal in July 2026, effectively ending the case without a trial on the complete body of evidence and without an animal-cruelty conviction. The surviving horses are now supposed to be returned to Clemmons. As of August 2026, publicly available reporting does not clearly confirm whether every surviving horse has physically been transferred back. The most accurate statement is that Clemmons is legally expected to regain possession of them.
