This Shabbat we will be taking out two Torah scrolls from the holy ark, and in the second one we will be reading the portion of the Half Shekel. G-d commanded Moses to take a census of the Jewish people. However, G-d warns Moses that by counting the number of the Jewish people Moses will be opening the Jewish people up to the envious powers of the Evil Eye, the Ayin Horaah. Therefore, G-d commands Moses to not directly count the Jewish people, but rather, that each Jew should give a Half Shekel coin, and then Moses should count the coins, rather than the people. In this lecture, which is based on a maamor that the Rebbe delivered in 1966, we are going to explore the gift of being counted, and the secret of how to ward off the envious Ayin Horaah.
