18. What Does "Holding Space" Mean? - with Kirsi-Marja Hardy
from Raw, Real and Radiant · host Claire Poho
This episode is one of my favorite conversations with my friend and fellow intuitive trauma-informed coach & certified parenting coach Kirsi-Marja Hardy. It is a rich exploration of a hugely important topic: the practice of "holding space" for others. Kirsi and I discuss how we show up for our friends or coaching clients who are going through challenging emotional experiences, and share how we personally wish to have space held for us. We address various components: the quality of the energy that someone brings through when holding space; the quality of the container that they can set up for our experience; what we’d like or dislike the supporting person to say or do while holding space for us, etc. Why is this so important? If you work with people, especially as a facilitator, knowing how to hold space for people in a safe and attuned way is much more impactful than the methods and skills that you are using to help them. This applies to coaches, healers, therapist, massage therapists, and even teachers. It applies to our personal relationships, too: if you aspire to be a better parent, partner or friend, learning how to support your loved ones in difficult moments is perhaps the best thing you can do.
