Alan Turing: Centenary Lectures Oxford University Alan Mathison Turing was born on 23 June, 1912 - exactly one hundred years before this weekend meeting which celebrates his life and achievements. Although most well-known for his work at Bletchley Park in the pioneering days which saw the birth of modern practical computing; Turing had achieved fame well before the second world war, with a seminal account of theoretical computation and his solution to the Entscheidungs problem. An Olympic-class marathon runner, whose refusal to conform to the narrow sexual standards of the day led to persecution and an early death - Turing did fundamental research on Artificial Intelligence, Computer Programming and even Mathematical Biology. This weekend attempts a rounded view of a polymath, one of the great mathematicians of the twentieth century, his life and his times. Twenty Years at Hull House by Jane Addams (1860 - 1935) LibriVox Jane Addams was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In a long, complex career, she was a pioneer settlement worker and founder of Hull-House in Chicago, public philosopher (the first American woman in that role), author, and leader in woman suffrage and world peace. She was the most prominent woman of the Progressive Era and helped turn the nation to issues of concern to mothers, such as the needs of children, public health and world peace. She emphasized that women have a special responsibility to clean up their communities and make them better places to live, arguing they needed the vote to be effective. Addams became a role model for middle-class women who volunteered to uplift their communities. This recording of her memoir Twenty Years at Hull-House commemorates the 100th anniversary of its publication, the 150th anniversary of Addams' birth, and was released on December 10th, the anniversary of Addams receiving her Nobel Prize. (Summary by Wikipedia and Consequences by E. M. Delafield (1890 - 1943) LibriVox Set in late Victorian England, “Consequences” follows the life of Alexandra Clare, a girl born into an upper class Catholic London family. Raised from birth for the privileged life of a wife and mother, Alexandra never quite fits in with her or her family’s expectations and fails at seemingly everything she tries – school, the marriage market, family life.
