We’re exploring the legendary Springfield, Missouri UFO airship sightings of 1897, a key part of the broader 1896–1897 “mystery airship wave” that swept across the Midwest long before the age of powered flight. Across Missouri and surrounding states, eyewitnesses reported seeing a massive cigar-shaped craft moving silently through the skies—often described with glowing searchlights, mechanical features, and the ability to hover, accelerate, and change direction in ways that defied known technology of the era. Springfield’s accounts stand out for their detailed witness descriptions, including claims of structured craft design, illuminated windows, and even alleged interactions between observers and the mysterious occupants. This episode breaks down historical newspaper reports, firsthand testimonies, and the most common theories behind the sightings—from misidentified natural objects and sensationalized journalism to early experimental aviation and unexplained phenomena that continue to challenge modern explanations. We also examine how these 19th-century reports eerily resemble modern UFO sightings, raising questions that still remain unanswered more than a century later.
