19: Adulting with Scoliosis - the '30s
from Behind The Brace Podcast · host Dr. Mandy Dietz
Your ’30s are the time of life when you are settling into your career, your family life, and just settling into a new groove of adulthood. The ’30s is also when physical issues with scoliosis start to creep up on us. In this episode, Dr. Mandy addresses what to watch for and what to do with scoliosis in your ’30s. Things to consider with scoliosis in your ’30s: Always consider your health history.Pay attention to if scoliosis bothers you during winter months while skiing but not during summer months. There is adult bracing available. It will provide correction to your spine while wearing it. It can help with postural changes, less pressure on the nerve, etc. Adults typically do not have to wear the brace 24/7. (Always ask your provider and follow recommendations.) What women with scoliosis in their ’30s should watch for: Women might notice that they have had zero scoliosis issues until they get pregnant. This is due to hormone changes in your body. Pay attention to what is happening in your body if you are pregnant and have scoliosis in your ’30s. Signs your body needs extra support include: pain, hard to move, feeling unstable on your legs – these are all signs that your spine is not handling the changes well. The key is for women to handle their scoliosis treatment proactively BEFORE pregnancy, and BEFORE you start to notice pain in general, etc. The earlier you start – and maintain – a solid scoliosis care plan in your ’30s, the better.Postpartum healing can be different with scoliosis, as well. Women with scoliosis can really benefit from consistent scoliosis care while their body is healing after pregnancy. What men with scoliosis in their ’30s should watch for: Men might notice that the things they did in their ’20s – such as working, traveling, sports – is catching up with them. They might notice that it takes them longer to heal and feel better after sports or long travels. Men with scoliosis in their ’30s can take better care of their bodies by getting enough sleep, good nutrition, consistent adjustments, and updated x-rays. The most important thing for every adult with scoliosis in their ’30s to remember is that you’re never too old to get help. There are so many solutions still available to you!
