#19: Genesis 38 | Er, Onan, Judah, and Tamar

There's a lot going on in this episode. Here are some of the highlights: Judah had sex with a Canaanite woman and they had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Judah found a wife for Er, whose name was Tamar. Er was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so God killed him. Judah told Er's brother Onan to have sex with his dead brother's wife. Er did that (more or less) but spilled his seed on the ground. So God killed him too. Judah had sex with Tamar, who was disguised as a prostitute. When Judah finds out who he had sex with, he orders Tamar to be burned. Tamar shows that Judah was the man she had sex with, so Judah decides not to burn her to death. Tamar had twin boys from the affair with Judah, one of whom (Pharez) is the ancestor of Jesus. The text and notes for this episode can be found here.
