190: Gifts And Fruit Of The Holy Spirit

How would you approach a biblical theology of the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit? What passages are central to understanding the work of the Holy Spirit today? Sadly, many Christians do not approach the work of the Holy Spirit from this perspective. Many times, while they think that they are using a biblical framework, they are mostly responding to both craziness within the church performed in the name of the Holy Spirit and then those who seek to criticize legitimate abuses of the spiritual gifts. One may see a church where everyone has fallen out and people are running around barking like dogs. Clearly, that is not what the Scripture teaches about the Holy Spirit. On the other hand, Christians see those events and swing the pendulum the other way and limit the work of the Spirit of God out of fear. How can we think biblically about the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit?  In this week's episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit by considering four verses that address a biblical approach to the Spirit's work. He argues that we often blame things upon the Holy Spirit because we do not have a sound biblical theology of the Holy Spirit. First, he starts in John 16:14.
