190 | The Glory and the Grief (Psalms 8-12)
from Holy Lit: The Bible · host Allen
These five psalms come from Book One of the Psalter, Psalms 1 through 41, almost all attributed to David. We are roughly in the tenth century BCE, the early days of the Israelite monarchy. Israel is a small kingdom boxed in by bigger, older powers: Egypt to the south, neo-Hittite states to the north, Aram-Damascus to the northeast, Philistine city-states along the coast. Solomon's Temple has not been built yet, but David has brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and set up a culture of worship music, appointing Levitical musicians and choirmasters. These psalms would have been sung, chanted, and played on instruments in that world. Poetry back then was not a private hobby. It was a public act of worship and political expression.Source:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PNsPAfDMREA6IlaeSQuKFw9p2eS-bYfs/view
