In their conversation James tells us about his musical history, starting with electric bass then to mandolin, finally banjo and guitar and his love bluegrass early on. James tells us about growing up in Chattanooga and eventually moving to Nashville and he tells us about the start of East Nash Grass. James talks gear, mandolins and guitars and tells us the story of a very special guitar that belonged to Earl Scruggs, his 1955 Martin D-18 that was in pretty poor shape and James has had it completely restored and plans to play it at the Ryman theatre in Nashville in July. James also tells us about how he amplifies his acoustic instruments and he discusses his side project a solo album using the Earl Scruggs guitar. James describes the band’s tour schedule and his day job in land management and farming.
