El año de 1978 quedó inscrito en la historia de la iglesia católica como el año de los tres papas: Pablo VI, Juan Pablo I y Juan Pablo II, se sucedieron dos cónclaves en menos de seis meses y significó un cambio de rumbo dentro de una milenaria institución como lo es la Iglesia Católica; pero además marcó la política exterior de la Iglesia de cara al final de la Guerra Fría, al elegir a un pontífice de detrás de la cortina de hierro.
