1982, sur le Controversy Tour Dans une chambre d’hôtel, Prince et ses musiciens découvrent "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow", un documentaire sur les prophéties de Nostradamus annonçant la fin du monde autour de 1999. Cette scène sera à l’origine de 1999, qui paraît en 1982 sur son 5ème album studio. Cette chanson qui annonce la fin du monde va devenir la bande-son quasi officielle du passage au nouveau millénaire. 1999 influencera aussi toute une génération d’artistes, notamment dans l’usage des machines et des structures longues.
