1Thessalonians Part 4 – 2:1-6 Verse 1-2 • “For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you” – Calling to remembrance of the situation and character with which they came and how they behaved among the Thessalonians. • “was not in vain” – There was fruit in their ministry there – Tit 1:10-11, 3:9, Eph 5:6, Phil 2:16. • “Suffered, shamefully entreated, at Philippi” – Acts 16:16-24, 2Cor 11:23-24. • “we were bold in our God” – Not bold in their own wisdom, but in God – Eph 3:12-13, 6:19-20, It was God who told them to go to Macedonia – Acts 16:9-10 • “To speak the gospel with much contention” – Acts 17:1-10. Verse 3-4 • “our exhortation not of:” – 2Cor 4:1-2, 2Cor 11:13, Tit 1:10. i. deceit – ~Error, that which leads to error, deceit or fraud~ ii. uncleanness ~the impurity of lustful, luxurious, profligate living. Impure motives. iii. guile - ~craft, subtilty, deceit~ …… 2Cor 12:16, Phil 3:7-8. • “to be put in trust with the gospel” – Paul being the one that it was given to first – 1Cor 9:17, Gal 2:7, 1Tim 1:11, Tit 1:2-3. • “not pleasing men, but God” – Gal 1:9-12….. but 1Cor 10:32-33, 1Cor 9:22, Rom 15:2, Col 3:22, • “who trieth our hearts” This is what we keep in mind – Prov 17:3, 1Cor 3:12-15, 4:5. Verse 5-6 • “neither at any time used we flattering words” –1Cor 2:1-5, 2Cor 2:17, 3:12. • “God is witness” – He tries the hearts – Rom 1:9, Gal 1:20, Phil 1:8, 2Cor 1:23. • “nor of men sough we glory” – Gal 6:14. • “we might have been burdensome” – Meaning they did not ask money from them, did not burden them – 2Cor 11:7-10, 12:13-14. Did not pressure them by coming in glory of their apostleship. • “as the apostles of Christ” – They had a right to reap carnal things – 1Cor 9:1-13, 1Tim 5:17-18. i. This is where we know that there were more than just the 12 apostle’s and Paul. ii. These would be the apostles in Eph 3:5, 1Cor 12:28, Eph 4:11-16 iii. Eph 4:11-16 Is not the reason he gave the 12 – John 15:16, Matt 19:28, Luke 22:30, Matt 28:18-20, John 20:19-23, James 1:1, Rev 21:14.
