1Thessalonians Part 5 – 2:7-12 Verse 7-8 • “But we were gentle among you” – Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit – Gal 5:22. How Christian’s ought to behave themselves – 2Tim 2:24-26, Titus 3:1-3. • “Even as a nurse cherisheth her children” – A mother cherishes and cares for her child, the same way Christ does the church and we do ourselves - Eph 5:29 • “Verse 8” – They were willing to give their own selves for the Thessalonians because of their care for them – 2Cor 12:15, 1:6, Phil 2:17, Col 1:24. Verse 9-12 • “Our labor and travail, laboring night and day” - 2Thess 3:7-8, Acts 18:1-3, 20:34-35, 1Cor 4:11-12 – Paul practiced what he taught – 1Tim 5:8, 2Thess 3:10,12. • “we would not be chargeable unto any of you” – So as not to be blamed and to set the example – Acts 20:33, 2Cor 11:9, 12:13-14. To boast in the gospel – 1Cor 9:14-19 • “we preached unto you the Gospel of God” – Freely, even in trial – Be leery of any wealthy pastor or minister seeking money – 1Tim 3:3,8, Titus 1:7,11. • “Ye are witnesses how…..we behaved ourselves among you“ - Actions do matter, here they behave holily, justly, unblameably. i. Holy ~Pure, saintly~ Col 3:12, Romans 12:1, 1Cor 3:17, ii. Justly ~Acting honorably before God and man, fair,righteous ~ 1Cor 6:11, Col 4:1, Titus 1:8. iii. Unblameable ~Without blame, no evil thing to say against you ~ Eph 1:4, Col 1:22, Phil 2:15, Titus 1:6-7, 2:7-8. • “Exhorted, comforted, charged every one of you” – Not just a few, but everyone. i. Exhort ~Strongly encourage, urge someone to do something ~ 1Tim 4:13, 2Tim 4:2, Titus 1:9 – Done by the word of God/doctrine ii. Comfort ~To give strength and hope, ease the grief or trouble, console~ 2Cor 7:6-7, 1Thess 4:18. iii. Charged ~To command, instruct with authority, to give a duty or responsibility to~ 1Tim 1:3, 6:17. • “As a father does his children” – The above are things fathers do. i. You see a comparison between mother and father and how Paul demonstrated both a mother cherishes, father exhorts, comforts and charges. A Christians we should do both especially amongst the brethren just as Paul did to the Thessalonians. • “That ye would walk worthy” – Eph 4:1, Col 1:10 – Walk in light of who Christ has made you and called you to be. • “Called you unto His kingdom and glory” – Because you are called with a holy calling – 2Tm 1:9, 1Cor 1:9, Eph 4:4, Col 3:15, 1Thess 4:7, 1Tim 6:12. ii. Not the gospel of the kingdom here – Mark 1:14-15 – It was at hand but didn’t come – Acts 1:6. iii. We ARE translated into the Kingdom of His son– Col 1:13. iv. A heavenly kingdom in heavenly places – 2Tim 4:18, Eph 2:6. v. Peter and the 12 looked for a kingdom to come to earth – Luke 12:31, 22:30, 1:33, Matt 6:10, Heb 11:10,16, 12:22, 13:14, Rev 21:2 vi. We are called to glory – Rom 8:18, Col 3:4 – Looking to be take from earth – Tit 2:13, Phil 3:14, 20-21. vii. Kingdom of God has to do with Gods sovereignty and is all encompassing – Acts 28:31
