Sometimes in good churches, there is a pressure to confirm to a certain list of rules, a certain lifestyle, a certain pattern of conduct. And if you don't conform to these expectations, others may pull away from you and distance themselves. The Apostle Paul learned that this had happened to his friends in a small church in Philippi. Visiting teachers from the mother church in Jerusalem had come to their city, and these Jewish teachers told the Gentile believers there that they needed to conform to some rules if they really wanted to be the best Christians possible. Paul wrote to warn his friends about the problem with seeking to please God by obeying a list of rules. He challenged them about these behaviors, and whether they really achieved righteousness or were they just a pile of rubbish?
