I 1919 kommer en ung tysk soldat til København. Han hedder Hermann Göring, og han bliver hurtigt berømt - både for sine kundskaber som pilot og for sine eskapader i det københavnske natteliv. På et tidspunkt går det så vidt, at en dansk-tysk jøde ved navn Hugo Rothenberg får til opgave at redde Göring ud af problemerne. Göring flytter ind hos familien Rothenberg, som langsomt får ham på ret køl. Og som tak skriver Göring et brev, hvori han lover at hjælpe Hugo, hvis det nogensinde skulle blive nødvendigt.
