Estar “en Cristo” (v. 17a) es un concepto mucho más profundo; representa una relación íntima, y Pablo lo expresa con el término “nueva criatura es” (v. 17b). Una nueva creación era la manera tradicional para describir a un nuevo judío prosélito. Dicho concepto tomó un sentido mucho más profundo en la encarnación de Jesucristo (comp. Juan 3:3; Rom. 6:4; Ef. 2:10; Fil. 2:1, 2, 5–11). Pablo usa palabras con un sentido especial para describir el nuevo orden de la nueva época; suena como una expresión escatológica cuando declara “las cosas viejas pasaron; he aquí todas son hechas nuevas” (v. 17c). El concepto de la salvación por obra de la ley cambió para incluir a todos “por gracia” (comp. Ef. 2:5). El sistema de adorar a Dios a través de ritos y sacrificios cambió también; ahora los adoradores tienen libre acceso a Dios, siendo personas renacidas con nuevas actitudes y un espíritu nuevo. En realidad “todas [las cosas] son hechas nuevas” (v. 17).
