2 Minute Drill by Steve Spaeck Director From The American State Litter Scorecard

from DIVERSIFIED GAME · host Kellen Kash Cache Coleman

We thank Steve for His 2 Minute Drill contribution to keep our country clean! Hi I'm Steve Spacek director of the American State Litter Scorecard. I thank diversified game for letting me guest this drill! To you, my listener, want to talk about celebrating the Earth and chat about the harms of solid waste littering and dumping. Nuisances--yet preventable behaviors for all US states and cities. When growing up in Texas, intrigued what governments did for people, like putting out fires, fixing streets. Later, working at a truck stop to pay grad school tuition, people would stumble from the highway, their vehicle totaled by debris left in the roadway. I became concerned. Seemed nobody wanted to write about talk about littering, how it ends up injuring, even killing, people. I wrote a thesis, DO MESS WITH IT, thinking this was a problem found only in the South. How wrong I was! Littering and dumping affected ALL 50 states. I began to present PowerPoint at public service conferences coast to coast.  I created the litterscorecard.com website, published newspaper press releases, guested talk shows--in service to the people, a way to spread the word. Did you know solid waste, that includes food, paper and plastic packaging and containers, these breed viruses and diseases? Hookworms, tetanus, hepatitis, Zika, spread by flies, mosquitoes, roaches, rodents, dogs, cats, possums. Cigarette filters, the single most littered item in the world, contain heavy metals, arsenic and polonium-210. Cigarette Butts are carried by storm drains into creeks, lakes, oceans, then consumed by fish, oysters and shrimp we ourselves may later eat for dinner. Did you know, here in America, over 800 people DIE each year, approximately 3 DEAD EACH DAY! from encountering with, or crashing into, tire treads, 2x4’s, scrap steel, tree limbs, and other discarded debris, left willy nilly on streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches? Hey! If you are a construction/landscape worker, attend stadium events; a heavy fast food eater, a smoker. If you’re a teen or young adult age 16 -25, LISTEN UP! Litter studies in the USA and Canada have found you are in the “Profiled Litterer” group, the most prone or willing, to litter, dump seemingly anywhere....anytime! Hey! If YOU live in New York City, Texas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Georgia, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Tennessee, Miami, Detroit, please ...think twice about littering. Please report by email littered areas you see that need cleanups. For tips, check out the litterscorecard.com site, follow on Twitter and Facebook. Again, it's Steve Spacek, thank ya for listening!
