On the 4th of July, 2013, a night of watching fireworks would end in murder for a young mother from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. It would be this woman’s tragic death that would inspire the MMIWG movement in the United States. The stories of the missing and murdered would, at last, be heard, and the victims' loved ones would demand that this epidemic of violence no longer be ignored. May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
