2 Peter 1: All Things Already Given — The Eyewitness Testimony, The More Sure Word, And The Lamp In The Dark Place

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness. All things. Already granted. By which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises, that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust. Partakers — sharers — in what God is. The starting point is already everything.Then the ladder of virtues. In your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness; and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love. Each quality growing from the one before it. Not the means of obtaining what is missing — the expression of what has already been received. For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.Then Peter's farewell posture. I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you — knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. A letter written against the horizon of death. The effort Peter makes is an act of love for people he will not see again on this side of the Kingdom.Then the two grounds of certainty. We were eyewitnesses of his majesty — on the holy mountain — when the voice came from the Majestic Glory. But then the thing that surprises: we have the more sure word of prophecy. More sure than eyewitness testimony. Because the eyewitness depends on the reliability of the witness. The prophetic word depends on the reliability of God.
