In this verse-by-verse Bible study, we dive into the second chapter of 2 Peter to examine the sobering reality of false teachers. Peter warns us that just as there were false prophets in the Old Testament, there will be those among us who smuggle in destructive heresies. The Subtle Art of Spiritual Infection False teaching rarely looks like an obvious frontal assault on Christianity. Instead, Peter describes it as something smuggled in “alongside” orthodox doctrine. It is a spiritual contagion, much like a virus, that seeks to afflict the body of Christ. Whether it is a college professor redefining the person of Jesus or a modern influencer prioritizing personal license over biblical morality, the goal is the same: to knock believers off balance. Key Marks of a False Teacher Based on 2 Peter 2:1-3, we can identify several red flags: Wrong Christology: Denying the Master who bought them, often by claiming His commands are outdated or that His Word is insufficient. Sectarian Spirit: Creating factions and siphoning people away into exclusive groups. Moral Compromise: Promoting a path of depravity and personal license that maligned the way of truth. Exploitation and Greed: Using “made-up stories” to make merchandise of believers. Standing Firm as the Remnant While Peter’s warning is serious, it is not meant to cause fear. It is meant to build our spiritual antibodies. Just as Obadiah and the Rechabites stood firm during eras of national idolatry, you and I can remain rooted in the truth today. We are called to be like the Bereans in Acts 17, daily examining the Scriptures to see if the things we hear are true. In this Calvary Chapel teaching, we look at why numbers and influence do not always equal truth. We explore the doctrine of imminence and why it matters that Christ’s atonement was provided for all. Most importantly, we learn that our best defense is to stay submitted to the Holy Spirit and to escape the influence of those who would lead us away from the simplicity of the Gospel. Join us as we continue our New Testament journey through 2 Peter, learning to walk in discernment, grace, and the strength that God provides to those who follow Him.
