2 Peter 2: Wells Without Water — The Portrait Of The False Teacher, Three Judgments, And The Lord Knows How To Deliver The Godly

But false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them. The word secretly — bringing the false teaching alongside the truth, close enough to seem compatible, different enough to destroy. Many will follow their immoral ways, and as a result the way of the truth will be maligned. The pastoral concern behind every word: the faith itself will be discredited by the behavior of those who claim to represent it while gutting it.Then three historical examples of the same pattern. God judged the angels who sinned, the ancient world, Sodom and Gomorrah. God delivered Noah, and Lot — who was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds. The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment.Then the portrait. Daring, self-willed, despising authority. Eyes full of adultery. A heart trained in greed. Following the way of Balaam — who could not curse Israel directly and so found another way — for money. Forsaking the right way.And the closing that should stop every reader. These are wells without water. Promising liberty while themselves bondservants of corruption. For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
