2 Peter 3: The Lord Is Not Slow — Patient With Us, New Heavens And New Earth, And Grow In Grace And Knowledge

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through 2 Peter Chapter 3 — the final chapter of the letter, where Peter answers the most important question the readers are facing: where is the promise of his coming?The mockers' question is real and specific. From the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. The argument is uniformity — nothing dramatic has happened, nothing dramatic is going to happen. Peter names what the mockers are doing: they willfully forget. They forget that the God who created the world by his word also destroyed it by water. And by the same word the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, reserved against the day of judgment.Then the reframing of divine time. Don't forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The mockers are measuring the promise by human time. God does not operate in that frame. The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness — but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. The time that looks like delay is the time in which people are still coming in. The patience has a direction and a purpose. And when the purpose is complete — the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.Then the question that matters. Therefore, since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness? Not — when will it happen. What kind of people ought you to be? We look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore be diligent to be found in peace, without blemish and blameless in his sight.And the final word: grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Not hold your ground.
