Before David fled the city, he set up Hushai to defeat the advice of Ahithophel, because Ahithophel had sided with Absolom during the coup. As Ahithophel offers up adive to Absolom, Hushai turns it on him, and ultimately protects David and all of his men. Because Hushai prevailed in his advice, Ahithophel knew that it would only end poorly for himself, so he got his house in order and hanged himself. As chapter 17 finishes out, we see the Lord providing for David and his company through faithful friends who desired to minister to them.
