2 Samuel Chapter 20
from Chains to Godliness · host Jim & Jody Carmichael
Following Absalom's rebellion, the kingdom is still fragile. A man named Sheba, a Benjamite, takes advantage of the tension between Judah and the northern tribes by declaring, "We have no part in David." Many Israelites abandon David and follow Sheba, creating another rebellion almost immediately after Absalom's defeat.David orders Amasa, whom he had recently appointed commander of the army in place of Joab, to gather the troops. When Amasa delays, David sends Abishai to pursue Sheba before he can fortify himself. Along the way, Joab, still determined to retain his position as commander, deceitfully greets Amasa as a friend and murders him with a sword hidden in his hand. Joab then resumes command of the army without David's approval.Sheba flees to the fortified city of Abel Beth Maacah, where Joab lays siege to the city. As Joab's forces prepare to destroy it, a wise woman from the city calls for Joab. She reminds him that Israel has long been known as a place of wisdom and peace and asks why he would destroy "a mother in Israel." Joab explains that he seeks only the rebel Sheba. The woman wisely persuades the citizens to execute Sheba and throw his head over the wall. Once justice is done, Joab ends the siege and returns to Jerusalem. The chapter concludes with a list of David's principal government officials, signaling that order has once again been restored to the kingdom. The lingering effects of civil unrest after Absalom's rebellion. The danger of ambitious and divisive leaders.Joab's ruthless pursuit of power.Wisdom preventing unnecessary destruction. The restoration of David's kingdom despite continued instability.God preserving David's reign even through flawed human leadersMajor Themes
