2 Samuel, Week 18 Day 1: When Your Heart Leads You Astray Devotional Our culture tells you to follow your heart and trust your gut. That is a lie. David, the man after God’s own heart, proved it. After his son Absalom murdered his brother Amnon, David was torn in two. He missed his exiled son and he resented what that son had done. So he did nothing. He let his feelings call the shots instead of seeking God. Your emotions are a gift from God, but they were never made to lead. When you are hurting or angry or confused, your feelings will point you down a road that feels right and ends in ruin. The wise person does not silence his emotions, but he does not obey them either. He stops. He prays. He goes to God’s Word and to godly people and listens. Your heart may be screaming one thing at you today. God’s wisdom may be saying the opposite. So submit your heart to Christ. Do not let a feeling that will be gone by next week make a decision you will carry for the rest of your life. Bible Verse “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” — Proverbs 12:15 (ESV) Reflection Question What decision are you facing right now where your emotions might be clouding your judgment, and who could you seek godly counsel from? Quote “You can’t always trust your gut. I know that’s one of the most common things people will tell you in your life. Just trust your gut. Well, the fact that everybody’s on Prilosec tells me that you shouldn’t always follow that advice.” Prayer Lord, I will not be ruled by my feelings. Rule me instead. Give me the humility to listen to wise counsel and to trust Your Word over my own gut. You are sovereign. I am not. Lead me.
