2 Samuel, Week 28 - Day 3: What Real Repentance Looks Like

from Pastor Steve’s Daily Devotionals · host Village Church RVA

2 Samuel, Week 28 Day 3: What Real Repentance Looks Like Devotional Repentance gets said a lot in church and understood very little. It is not feeling bad about what you did. It is not promising to do better next time. Real repentance is a complete turn. Away from your sin and toward God. No excuses attached to the end of it. Watch David after the conviction hits. He did not blame his advisors. He did not point at his accomplishments to justify his pride. He called himself a fool. He laid the sin out plainly before God and asked for mercy. That takes courage, and it is the only road to real freedom. There is a difference between worldly grief and godly grief. Worldly grief is being sorry you got caught. Sorry about the consequences. Sorry about how it looks to other people. Godly grief is being broken that you sinned against a holy God who loves you. One keeps you where you are. The other changes you. Repentance begins with honesty. You have to call your sin what it is and not what is more comfortable to call it. You did it. Own it. But that honesty is not the end of the story. It is where restoration starts. God is not waiting to condemn you. He is waiting to meet you. Bible Verse “For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” — 2 Corinthians 7:10 (ESV) Reflection Question When you have sinned in the past, have you practiced godly grief or worldly grief, and what was the difference in the outcome? Quote “Repentance always begins with bad news. What’s that bad news? You being exposed for the sinner that you are.” Prayer Father, teach me what real repentance looks like in my own life. Break my heart over my sin the way Your heart is broken by it, and lead me into the freedom that only comes through honest confession. Amen.
