20. Belle Gunness: The Black Widow of LaPorte

from Buried

The Gunness farm case is one of the strangest serial killer mysteries in U.S. history, taking place in LaPorte, Indiana. It revolves around Belle Gunness, who was suspected of being a cold-blooded murderer responsible for the deaths of her husbands, children, and numerous men who responded to her newspaper ads seeking marriage. In 1908, her farm burned down, and a headless female body was found, believed to be Belle’s. However, her former employee, Ray Lamphere, later confessed to helping Belle dispose of victims, claiming she had faked her death and fled.Belle's crimes spanned years, involving insurance scams and the dismemberment of victims whose bodies were often fed to pigs. Estimates suggest Belle could have killed between 25 to 30 people. The case was further complicated by the appearance of Esther Carlson, a Scandinavian woman who resembled Belle and was arrested in 1931 for similar crimes. However, Esther died before her identity could be confirmed, leaving the mystery of Belle Gunness unsolved. This case remains one of the most perplexing in American criminal history, raising questions about Belle's true fate and whether she continued her crimes under a new identity.
