花木兰是中国文学作品中的一个女英雄。她女扮男装、替代父亲去从军的故事在民间广为流传。很多艺术作品中都有她的形象。中学课本里的古诗《木兰辞》，讲的就是她的故事。除了古诗，不少电视剧和电影里也有她的身影。 木兰被外国朋友熟知主要是因为迪斯尼公司在1998年拍摄的动画片《Mulan》。动画片里的木兰有一头黑色的长发，个性活泼勇敢。她的爸爸妈妈一心想给她找一个好丈夫，可惜事情进行得不那么顺利。之后，北方匈奴入侵，木兰的父亲也在征兵的名单上。担心父亲身体不好，她决定女扮男装，替父亲上战场。在这个过程中，木兰遇到了很多困难，但是一直没有放弃，直到最后战争胜利。 动画片在原来故事的基础上增加了很多人物和细节，使它变得更好看。迪斯尼公司在《Mulan》大获成功之后，于2004年推出了《Mulan 2》，但是第二部的评价不如第一部那么好。2017年年底，迪斯尼公司宣布计划开拍真人电影《花木兰》。在中国家喻户晓、被称为“神仙姐姐”的演员刘亦菲将成为女主角。
