Floods can happen for many reasons including heavy rains, rough oceans and seas, Spring thaws and melting snow , or even when dams or levees break. A damaging flood may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover the rooftops of houses. Floods can occur within minutes or over a long period, and may last days, weeks, or longer. Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters.Flash floods, on the other hand, are the most dangerous kinds of floods, because they combine the destructive power of a flood with the incredible speed and strength of moving water and debris. Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall exceeds the ability of the ground to absorb it. They can happen within minutes, the cause and effects of distant rainfall, limiting the time available to warn and protect the public.More than 3,000 flash flood warnings have been issued in the United States so far this year — the highest number on record.Hurricane season in the Atlantic officially runs from June 1st to November 30th.
