Hello, this is Nick Collins of Information Security Media Group, and I'm joined today by Stan Rowe, who is the global CSO of the C seller. Good morning, Stan. Good morning. One thing I want to talk with you about, Stan, is we're doing a number of roundtable discussions coming up on the topic of the zero trust network access that we've done.
We've got a bit of a roadshow in Phoenix, San Francisco, San Jose and Cincinnati coming up in the next month or two. So what I wanted to pick your brains out a little bit is zero trust. So we hear about in 2019, but as we go into 2020. So what is the point of the potential of zero trust?
Why are we hearing so much about that? Well, I think really mainly because it's sort of moved into the mainstream from being a. I don't want to use the term fringe technology, but a transformative technology that has been starting on the adoption curve where people are starting to start thinking about the zero trust. And now that Gartner has published their zero trust model, sase, I think it's moved, started to move into more of the mainstream.
I think that, you know, coupled with the move of a lot of customers using Office 365 and, you know, SharePoint Online and Teams and stuff like that are sort of forcing organizations to take a look at that zero trust network access model and being able to support their organization's ability to use applications and data in the cloud and the way to secure that. There's obviously, you know, we think zero Trust or that zero Trust network methodology, the service, service assets, service edge that Gartner talks about. Well, I guess, I mean, we have a record, a lot of that. I guess 2019 might be the year of zero trust being kind of the marketing collateral buzzword.
I think 2018, AIML, but I think I'd like to see 2020 as a year of clarification of zero trust. So, I mean, from your standpoint, Stan, I mean, what does zero trust actually mean? So for me, you know, zero trust is really built around four real principles. One is granting access based upon four different criteria and applying policy and access based upon that.
One is obviously the identity. What we know about you as an individual, are you an employee, are you a contractor, you're a volunteer, whatever. Two is the device that you find access with, is it managed, is it unmanaged, patched, is it not patched? And then three is the location that you find access.
Are you, you know, somewhere that's a good country, somewhere that's a bad country, you know, you're on net, off net, whatever. And four is the sensitivity and the criticality of the data that you're trying to access. I mean making a policy based decision and applying security policy and access rights based upon those four things. And that's really when we talk about, you know, when marketers talk about zero trust and we talk about, you know, from a security perspective, zero trust, that's what we're talking about is granting access applications and data based upon essentially those four operational criteria.
So again, just for clarification, it doesn't literally mean trust nothing. It means just be more, have a greater scrutiny of what you are trusting, I guess. Absolutely. And you know, the idea is essentially granting access after you've done some type of validation, whether it be validation of the device, the individual's identity, the access methodology, the sensitivity of the criminality of the data.
Again, going into 2020, Stan, what specific initiatives, tell me, based on public information, what kind of initiatives are we going to see is ZSCADA putting into play when it comes to zero trust? I think we're going to start implementing technology we talked about, you know, as zero trust becomes, as zero trust becomes more prevalent and more operationalized is being able to give companies and organizations a tool to be able to implement this A better B be more efficient for the implementation and C, sort of when it's operationalized, being able to tell because you're using the public network, being able to tell where that, where an issue lies, whether it's on endpoint, whether it's in the last mile, whether it's on, you know, Zscaler's network or whether it's going to be in the application side, being able to provide the operational folks a little bit better insight into what's going on. Other I can't access my application. Two, more integration of ML machine learning into our tools and services to better utilize or provide better results rather for those security rules and access method access rules that we, that we're providing for our customers make it a little bit easier for folks.
And again, we're always on the hunt for new and interesting technologies as they evolve to help us help our customers to more effectively utilize our tools and services to better protect our environments. Sad. Absolutely. Catching up.
