2020 Year In Review

from Recovery Rebirth Podcast

2020 and 2021 were unprecedented for many of us. Most of us have never lived through a pandemic of this proportion. People’s work and home lives were upended. Unemployment, working from home, virtual learning, shopping with masks and viewing our fellow citizens as potential contagions. Fear, anxiety, forced isolation and the scarcity mentality, and hoarding took a huge toll on our collective mental health. We were all plunged into survival mode and our amygdala was fully activated. Add to that a highly contentious election year, protests and riots. The nation was painfully divided during a time when unity was vital to our collective well-being. For those of us in recovery, it was easy to backslide into our maladaptive coping mechanisms and character defects. Relapse and overdoses spiked during this time. The face of recovery during the pandemic adapted as we could no longer gather in-person. Thankfully, countless virtual meetings sprung up out of necessity. Still this was a huge adjustment for those of us who looked forward to the fellowship we experienced through our meetings. In this episode, we share how the pandemic and the political and social vitriol impacted our jobs, relationships, mental health and recovery programs.
