(virtually through Zoom, but it still counts!)We kick things off with the documentary New Wave, which follows director Elizabeth Ai on a mission to share the untold story of rebellious punks in the '80s Vietnamese new wave community, but in the process, ends up facing her own haunting past. Director Elizabeth Ai and producer Rachel Sine reflect on how the film took a turn on an unexpected emotional roller coaster, the importance of archival footage (and their creative way of collecting it), the importance of discussing mental health in the AAPI community, and getting Simu Liu on board as Executive Producer. Next, we discuss the short film A Family Guide to Hunting, about a daughter who takes her uptight Korean-American parents and All-American boyfriend on a bonding hunting trip, where things turn from bad to grisly.
