2025 Wakefield Soccer

This evening, I had the chance to speak with four standout seniors from Wakefield High School’s soccer team following their stunning regional semifinal upset over defending state finalist McLean. Joining me were Vajk Dawson (heading to VCU), Ryan Goff-Glennon (JMU), Ricky Perez (VMI), and Erik Vasquez (Lynchburg).We reflected on a season where Wakefield consistently performed well, yet few expected them to make a serious run at the state playoffs. The players credited Coaches Eddie, Celvin, and John for their ability to prepare and motivate the team, creating a belief that anything was possible.We discussed key moments from both the regular season and postseason that set the stage for their playoff push. The players offered insight into how they managed to take down a strong — and at times controversial — McLean team, breaking down what made their victory possible.To wrap things up, we talked about their college choices and what lies ahead, both on and off the field. It was a true honor to speak with these four talented young men in the wake of such a huge achievement — a moment they, and Wakefield, won’t soon forget.
