2026 Austin Bar Shooting: Investigation of Potential Terror Nexus

from The World Between Us · host Norse Studio

On March 1, 2026, a tragic mass shooting occurred in the heart of Austin, Texas, specifically targeting patrons at Buford's Backyard Beer Garden on West 6th Street. The incident, which began at approximately 1:50 a.m. as bars were preparing to close, resulted in the deaths of three people, including the gunman, and left 14 others injured. The perpetrator was identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal who resided in Pflugerville, Texas, and had previously lived in the Bronx, New York. Reports indicate that Diagne drove a large SUV past the bar multiple times before stopping, activating his hazard lights, and opening fire with a pistol through the vehicle's open window. He initially targeted individuals on the patio and sidewalk before driving a short distance to Wood Street. There, he exited the SUV armed with a rifle and continued shooting at pedestrians while walking back toward the center of the entertainment district.Due to a heavy weekend security presence in the area, police officers were able to respond within seconds. Three officers confronted the gunman and fatally shot him within a minute of the initial emergency call. Investigators recovered both a pistol and a rifle from the scene and the suspect's vehicle. The FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are currently investigating the attack as a potential act of terrorism. Several indicators found at the scene have suggested a possible ideological motive. At the time of the shooting, Diagne was reportedly wearing a sweatshirt that said "Property of Allah" with an undershirt featuring an Iranian flag. Additionally, a Quran was discovered inside his vehicle. Authorities are exploring whether the attack was a response to significant geopolitical events, specifically the U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran that occurred the previous day, resulting in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. While investigators are looking into potential ties to foreign terrorism or self-radicalization, they have also noted that Diagne was known to law enforcement as an emotionally disturbed individual with a history of mental health issues. His prior criminal record included minor arrests for offenses such as illegal vending in New York City.In response to the violence, Texas Governor Greg Abbott activated service members under Operation Fury Shield and directed the Department of Public Safety to increase patrols and surveillance in downtown Austin. The shooting has highlighted heightened international tensions, leading state and federal officials to bolster security around critical infrastructure. Of the 14 hospitalized victims, several remain in critical condition as the investigation into the exact motive continues.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-world-between-us--6886561/support.
