For kids and middle grade readers: “Guts” by Raina Telgemeier (Graphix) (6:22)And for teens and young adults: “Simon and Louise” by Max de Radigués (Conundrum). (18:39)In this pilot episode of “Comics PLEASE! Kids Graphic Novels and YA Comics for Parents, Librarians, Educators, and School-aged Enthusiasts,” @TwoPlai tries out a new format for podcasting about comics for young readers. We begin with two 8-Minute Reviews, starting with “Guts,” the new autobiographical kids and middle grade book by Raina Telgemeier from Scholastic’s Graphix line. A follow up to the mega-hits “Smile” and “Sisters,” Telgemeier’s new “Guts” explores her childhood experiences with anxiety, stomach pains, friendships, and therapy. Then, a review of “Simon and Louise” by Max de Radigués, a Conundrum book for teens and young adults that tells two connected stories about the mishaps and misadventures of a boyfriend and girlfriend on separate summer breaks. “Simon and Louse” came out in early August, 2019.Paul follows up these reviews with a few other recommended titles (26:30 ) for folks who have enjoyed Raina’s memoir books, including “Sheets” by Brenna Thummler, “New Kid” by Jerry Craft, “Click” by Kayla Miller, and the “Luz” series by Claudia Dávila. And he recommends the other work of Max de Radigués, especially the new "Stig and Tilde" from Nobrow. Then, in the “Chalk Talk Chat,” Paul talks about a question other parents have asked him before: “Okay, I got my kid into reading comics... What if my kid will ONLY read comics now?” (36:56)Your thoughts?Find the Comics Syllabus at its home at Multiversitycomics.com: http://www.multiversitycomics.com/tag/comics-syllabus/Subscribe and follow the Comics Syllabus podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you find podcasts, or copy this RSS feed to your podcatcher: https://paulflai.com/feed/podcast/comicssyllabusJoin the discussion on the Comics Syllabus Facebook page: http://facebook.com/ComicsSyllabus or with Paul on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TwoPlai or Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twoplai/Thanks for listening!
