206: Chatting about Getting Sober with Amy Liz Harrison

Today we are talking to Amy Liz Harrison. Turning to the bottle may seem like an easy way to cope with stress, but it doesn’t solve anything, as she learned the hard way. Today, the mom of 8 who has been sober for 10 years and was just featured on Tamron Hall, is sharing her story. In her memoir, Eternally Expecting: A Mom of Eight Gets Sober and Gives Birth to a New Life...Her Own, Harrison details how even though her life was perfect on paper she was constantly overwhelmed and felt horrifically guilty that mothering alone wasn’t enough to fill her deep loneliness. Her rollercoaster to sobriety begins with blackouts at her husband’s work events, and twists and turns as she takes a nose-dive down the stairs while holding her two-year-old daughter, ending up in the ER. Things speed up as she ransacks hotel minibars and refills the alcohol bottles with water, overcompensates for her behavior by becoming a “Disneyland-type” mom with no financial boundaries, receives visits from Child Protective Services, and gets arrested.
