As Lauryn struggled to acquire the foundational skills of early literacy, her "A" rated, publicly funded Massachusetts school district abandoned her educational and functional needs by solely implementing the K-3 Balanced Literacy curriculum and instruction. As a result, Marilyn had no other choice but to fund Lauryn's placement in a private school that employs Structured Literacy. Once Lauryn began receiving appropriate instruction, she thrived academically and later became student council President.
