Wish You Could Bring Him Back? How to Cope with the Daily Grief of Dementia There’s a kind of grief that doesn’t come with a funeral. No casseroles. No sympathy cards. No public acknowledgment. Just a quiet ache that shows up in ordinary moments. In this episode, we’re talking about the daily grief of loving a husband with early-onset dementia the grief that comes from watching someone you love slowly change while still being physically present. If you’ve ever thought, “I just want him back,” this conversation is for you. This is not a lack of faith. This is ambiguous loss. And it is real. What We Cover in This Episode 1. Understanding Ambiguous Loss We discuss the concept of ambiguous loss, a term coined by family therapist and researcher Pauline Boss. Ambiguous loss occurs when: A person is physically present but psychologically changing There is no clear closure There is no defined ending The grief is ongoing and unresolved We anchor this truth in Scripture: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” — Proverbs 13:12 When restoration feels delayed or uncertain, the heart grows weary. God understands that tension. 2. Why the Daily Triggers Hurt So Deeply The grief isn’t always loud. It often appears in: Forgotten memories Missed leadership moments Parenting decisions you now carry alone Church services that feel different Subtle personality changes We reflect on this promise: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 Your grief is not invisible to God. 3. Faith and Grief Can Coexist Wanting things to be different does not mean you lack trust. Even Jesus wept. Lament is biblical. Sorrow is human. Faith is choosing to cling to God in the sorrow. 4. What Happens When Grief Is Unprocessed When grief is buried, it often surfaces as: Irritability Resentment Emotional numbness Spiritual dryness Burnout Caregivers cannot carry daily grief and daily responsibilities without intentional emotional release. 5. How to Carry Grief Without Being Crushed Jesus invites the weary: “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 We explore practical, faith-centered strategies including: Naming your grief instead of suppressing it Separating the disease from the person Creating memory and meaning rituals Building micro-moments of joy Leaning into safe community support You do not have to pretend this is easy. You are allowed to grieve and still walk faithfully in your calling. Key Takeaway You are not weak for wanting him back. You are grieving. And grief does not disqualify you from being a strong, faithful wife or mother. In fact, learning to process it well strengthens your ability to endure this season with clarity and purpose. Ambiguous loss is real. But so is God’s nearness.
