«Alla vigilia dei 150 anni dell’Unità, il racconto storico e la visione dell’Italia che ebbero Cavour, Vittorio Emanuele II e Garibaldi. Cavour, nato suddito di Napoleone per tutta la vita parlò e scrisse in francese meglio che in italiano. Carlo Alberto lo considerava “un carbonaro impertinente”. Sosteneva che l’Italia nata dal Risorgimento doveva incarnare i grandi principi della Rivoluzione francese e che gli operai dovevano essere pagati meglio “per prevenire il socialismo”. Primo ministro per nove anni, terrorizzò i possidenti aumentando le imposte e investì per modernizzare il paese: durante il suo governo triplicò il PIL, creò dal nulla strade, ferrovie, canali e banche.
