220: Germaine Jenkins, Fresh Future Farm (North Charleston, SC)

from The Southern Fork

I first interviewed Germaine Jenkins for Episode 14 of this show, a mere two years after she co-founded Fresh Future Farm in North Charleston, SC on a vacant city lot with limited resources. Since then, she's built and led a team that is creating abundance in a disinvested neighborhood, been featured in Food & Wine, the New York Times, and Essence Magazine, and she's shared her story with politicians and policy makers, all while working day-to-day on farm operations and building community in the arena of food justice. Just as the banana trees and blueberries on the farm have grown, so have the ideas of -- and the challenges for -- the farm that is anchoring a community.
