223: Space Pheasants

The Hirogen (VOY) and the Hunters (DS9: "Captive Pursuit") Comparison.   It's clearly unethical to hunt another sentient being for sport; well, unless you are the Hirogen in Star Trek: Voyager or unless you are the Hunters in the first-season Deep Space Nine episode "Captive Pursuit." But while nicely-pressed red uniforms and glow-in-the-dark space helmets may be the hunting attire of choice for the Hunters in "Captive Pursuit" (hearkening back to the great English redcoat fox hunts of old Earth), the Hirogen took the sport of hunting to a more violent and more visceral level.   In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Kay Shaw compare and contrast the tribal and nomadic Hirogen from Voyager with the more gentlemanly Tosk-hunters from the first-season Deep Space Nine episode "Captive Pursuit." Did the Hunters in Deep Space Nine provide the germ of the idea, and the model for, the more violent Hirogen in Voyager?
