一个狡猾的人和同伴打赌，他约定要证明德尔斐的神示是假的。到了约定日期，狡猾的人拿了一只小麻雀，将它藏在外衣里。他问神他手里的东西是活还是死。他想，若神说是死的，他便把活麻雀拿出来；若神说是活的，他就捏死麻雀，再拿出来。神识破了他的诡计，说：“收起你那一套把戏吧！你手里的东西是死是活，还不是在于你自己？”
